Technology in Today’s Classroom: Are You a Tech-Savvy Teacher?

Original Article

Summary

When most of today’s educators were in school, technology was not available like it is now. However, in today’s classroom, technology abounds and students are extremely tech-savvy. This has presented many challenges in the classroom and requires teachers to continuously learn and embrace new forms of instruction in order to enrich the learning experience of students.

Benefits of Technology

The influx of technology has produced many positive effects for students both in and out of the classroom. Although one would expect digital natives to have shorter attention spans, research has shown that children who seem to be inattentive and distracted during activities are often “soaking up” just as much as their completely engaged counterparts.

Because of the prevalence of technology in everyday life, students have shifted to a more visual learning style, meaning that modern digital natives may not respond well to traditional teaching methods, like lectures or textbook reading.

Technology is also beneficial to teachers. Although they may take time to learn in the beginning, the amount of time they save far outweighs the initial investment.

Conclusion

Technology is definitely the wave of the twenty-first century and will continue to be prevalent in education. It is in the best interest of both the student and teacher to incorporate technology in the classroom as often as possible.
