When it comes to technology, there are a variety of errors we run into — this article is by no means a “one size fits all,” but rather a suggestion of steps you should take before giving up on your computer. We hope these four simple tech tips resolve your issues.
Restart Your Computer
There’s a reason that turning your computer off and on again has become a popular meme in IT circles — it’s an easy fix for a variety of miscellaneous errors. Computers are occasionally faulty and will need a restart to get things running again.
Press and hold the power button until the computer completely powers down. Count to ten and turn it back on again.
Clear Up Space on Your Computer
When a computer has very little free space, it cannot run properly. If your computer starts running slow, it could be a sign that you have too much stored on your hard drive.
As a member of UAMS, you have access to Box, a cloud storage system that makes cleaning up your computer easy. Register or Log In to your account and start migrating old files. Box maintains your file structure, so all your projects are easy to find.
Free Up RAM
Certain programs start running when you turn your computer on. These applications running in the background may be overworking your computer.
Open up the Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) and stop the ones that you don’t need. Be careful not to end something you don’t know, or you may cause your computer to run improperly. Only close the ones you are sure of.
Contact UAMS IT
If you’ve tried these simple solutions and none of them have worked, you might have to contact UAMS IT. They are a great group and will get back to you in a timely manner.
Before contacting IT, it is beneficial to write down any error codes or what’s going on with the computer. The better they can understand, the easier it is for your problem to be resolved.
Congratulations — you now know these tech tips that almost seem too good to be true. We hope this helped you with your troubleshooting.
