Actions (examples)

Level 1 Describe definition of educational scholarship

  • Describe how you keep up with the medical literature and subscribe to electronic tables of contents of journals
  • Identify Glassick’s criteria for scholarship and Boyer’s definition of scholarship
  • Name medical education journals, online forums, and courses that enhance personal educational practices
  • Identify forums for dissemination of educational approach, curricula, and/or research

Level 2 Participate in medical education scholarship and the dissemination of educational approaches, curricula, and/or research

  • Participate in development of curricular modules for local courses
  • Participate in a medical education research project to learn fundamental qualitative, quantitative, or synthetic skills
  • Edit a section of a medical education scholarly article or chapter
  • Serve as a reviewer for MedEdPortal submission

Level 3 Expand medical education scholarship or evidence through regular dissemination of educational approaches, curricula, and/or research findings

  • Present a medical education study at a regional or national medical education conference
  • Write a section of a medical education scholarly article or chapter

Level 4 Serve as the principal investigator for medical education scholarship

  • Design theoretical framework and complete and evaluate a trial on assessing the effect of clinical and educational work hours on patient safety

Level 5 Demonstrates expertise in the field of medical education scholarship and provides guidance, consultation, and mentoring across medical education

  • Mentors a more junior faculty member in writing a book chapter using education theory and practice
  • Serve a section editor or associate editor for a medical education journal
